Wooden Father Christmas Decoration

Father Christmas is a traditional seasonal figure and is well loved by children. Create this decoration to fill your home with Christmas cheer for your home.

For this project you will need:

- plywood 10 mm thick for the tree, base and Father Christmas
- 4 pieces of wood cut into block shapes (these will be the gifts)
- paint in the following colors: dark green, dark red, brown, white and black
- drill with 3,2 mm bit
- screws 35 mm x 4.0 cm long
- baker’s twine
- scroll saw
- sandpaper
- paintbrushes
- old toothbrush
- wood glue

Instructions:

1. Print out your patterns. Trace them on the appropriate wood pieces.
2. Paint all of the pieces in the appropriate colors. The shading on the beard and cloke were created by painting wet-in-wet. This means while the main color is still wet, add a second color (like black to the white and black to the red) in a very small amount and blend it gently with the main color to create a darker area. The black gives the white a grey color and makes the red into a dark crimson.
3. If you choose, after the pieces are dried, dip an old toothbrush into white paint. Brush your finger or thumb along the bristles to make the paint splatter onto your decoration. This adds a nice effect to the decoration.
4. Drill 1 hole in the bottom of the tree and 2 holes in the bottom of Father Christmas. Mark the positions on your base and drill holes through it, too. Screw these pieces then to the base board.
5. Wrap each of the gifts with baker’s twine. Place the gifts randomly onto the base.
