Summer Craft Project - Altered Wooden Chest with Drawers

If you are fortunate to have an Ikea store close by, you will find lots of wooden items just begging to be altered. Also look around at home. Possibly in the basement or attic, you can find wooden items that need a face lift. You do not need much to make the change and the results look great.

Ikea Chest with Drawers - Finished

For this project you will need:

- wooden drawer chest - (from Ikea for example) - see image below
- wrapping paper of choice
- acrylic paint matching color of paper
- decoupage glue (from Modge Podge for example)
- paint brush for paint and glue
- scissors and pencil

Instructions:

1. If you have an unfinished wooden object, the first thing you will want to do is to paint your item with the paint you have chosen and let this dry. Paint only the areas that will be seen once the chest is finished. If you paint areas that are inside of the chest, it could be you cannot fit the drawers in the chest anymore due to the thickness of the paint. If your items has already been painted or lacquored, you will first need to sand it down to remove as much of the old paint as possible.
2. Because each drawer may differ by millimeters in size, it is necessary to take measurements of each individual drawer. Take the first drawer and place the front of it on the backside of the wrapping paper. Take your pencil and trace the drawer and cut out this template. Use the Modge Podge to adhere this piece to the drawer. You may wish to sand the edges around the paper so it does not hang over. Once complete, Cover with a coat or two of Modge Podge to seal the paper.
3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining drawers.
