1. Pin or clip the two lining pieces together.
Also pin or clip the two exterior pieces together.
2. On both the exterior pieces as well as the lining, sew down both sides and across the bottom.
!!! On the lining, do leave about a 10-15 centimeter opening at the bottom of the bag so you can turn it afterwards.
3. When the sides and bottom are sewn, you still have the square you cut away to sew.
4. To sew this, you will match the sewing line of the side seam to the sewing line of the bottom seam.
5. Clip these together.
6. Repeat for the other side as well. You see here that both sides have been prepared for sewing.
7. Then sew across so you are connecting the side of the tote to the bottom. This creates a wide floor for the bag. Zig-zag the sewn edge for extra stability.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 from above for the exterior tote pieces.
9. Leave the lining as is (wrong side is outside).
Turn the exterior tote piece so that the right side is outside. Clip or pin one side of the strap about 7 centimeters from the outside edge of the tote. Do the same for the other side, making sure that the strap is not twisted.
Turn the tote so that the top of the other side is facing upwards. Also pin the second strap piece to the top, matching the ends with the previously pinned pieces.
10. If you chose not to use a magnetic strap, you might want to create a loop to close your bag. Take a piece of fabric cording (or a cording of your choice) and cut it to about 10-15 centimeters. Then place both open ends to one side of the tote centered between the straps.
Now place the tote’s exterior piece inside of the tote lining. !!! Both right sides should be facing each other.
Line up the side seams and then pin the tote exterior and lining together.
11. Sew along the top edge, 7 mm from the edge all the way around the tote.
12. Then turn the tote though the hole left at the bottom of the lining.
13. Pull the exterior through the hole.
14. Now the tote looks like this.
15. Place the lining down into the tote, adjusting everything so it sits well.
16. Then iron the tote so that it looks unwrinkled and flat.
Especially at the top edge it is important that the edges are matching well.
17. Top stitch around the entire top of the tote edge again. This looks not only nice but also sews an extra line over the straps which will hold them even better.
The last you have to do is sew the hole closed at the lining of the bag. You can hand stitch it together using this tutorial for the small pouches.
You can even consider creating a matching cosmetic pouch to for this bag.
