Lined Fabic Tote Sewing Project

This tote can be custom made to any size you prefer for your needs and is lined so it will hold a lot of weight, too. Choose a fabric you love for the exterior and then a matching fabric for the lining. A metal magnetic closure is used to close it at the top to keep your things in it while carrying it. If you leave the closure away, the bag is also reversible.

Sewing Project - Easy Lined Fabric Tote

To make this bag you will need: A sewing machine, thread, scissors, a quilter’s ruler (15 x 60 centimeter ruler is best), rotary cutter, cutting mat, water soluble marker and/ or chalk pencil for marking lines and the following:

- Two rectangles of fabric measuring 58 x 55 centimeters. These are the basic bag pieces. (You are not limited to these sizes.
These are the sizes used for this particular bag.)
- One piece of fabric measuring 30 x 58 centimeters. This will be the inside pocket strip. (If you use your own measurements,
this piece should be the same width you used for your basic bag pieces.)
- Two rectangles of lining fabric each measuring 58 x 55 centimeters. (If you cut your own measurements, the lining pieces will
be cut the same size as the fabric for the exterior of the bag)
- Two long pieces of fabric (your choice and for this bag, the same fabric for the exterior was used) 14 x 70 centimeters. These
  will be for the handles.
- One magnetic closure set
- A small piece of interfacing to strengthen the area of the magnetic closure.
- Two pieces of interfacing, each measuring 30 centimeters high x 58 centimeters wide to strengthen the pocket (or the width
of your own custom measurements of your bag)
- If your fabric is thin, you will need additional interfacing that is cut the same size as the fabric pieces
- Masking tape

Detail of Inside of Lined Fabric Tote
Here you see the inside of the bag. The dark blue fabric is the lining. The magnetic closure is attached to the lining and can only be seen on the inside of the bag. There is a pocket in the bag that has been stitched into three compartments to keep your small items (like your keys, phone or tissues) easily reachable.

Striped Shopping or Beach Tote
How about using colorful striped black fabric and a dotted pink lining? Pink was chosen to match the pink stripes on the tote bag. The color works nice on the inside of the tote and is not so dark so you can see what is inside. Here instead of using a magnetic closure, a large button was sewn on the front of the tote. A loop was attached to wrap around the button. You can use a piece of cord for the loop or create a loop using the fabric. This gets added and sewn on during the same step when you pin the fabric straps to the bag of the tutorial.

Black and Pink Striped Tote
The fabric used for all of the totes is from Ikea and is a heavy and strong fabric that can hold a lot of weight.
