Illustrated Craft Tutorial - Adding More Points to the Bascetta Star

Now the star will expand even more...

Here you will now build onto the shape you just created on the previous page:

Bascetta Star Tutorial 51

1. This is how the star looked at the end of the previous page. You will now be adding more points to the star.

This star has 5 flat points. You will be now only working with these flat points. Each of these flat points will be the next 5 base pieces.

That means you will be adding to each of these 2 points, 2 new folded papers and forming a dimensional pyramid shape out of each of these points, thus creating 5 more “pyramids”.

Also each of these 5 flat points will create 10 new flat points.

2. So you start off by opening the first of the 5 flat points (marked “x”). Then you will add 2 new folded papers to the point and use the technique to create a dimensional pyramid point just like the previous ones you made.

3. When finished, this is how the new point looks. To prevent any future confusion, place a paper clip on the 2 newly created flat sides.

The paper clips will take away any confusion to which points are the “bases” you will be working with and which points are the newly added ones.

At this time you will only be adding new papers to the bases and not to the new points. This was the first. There are still 4 points to go.

4. This is how the star looks from underneath. You see the 4 points that are the “bases” and at the top the two new points that have been marked with the paper clips.

5. Now add 2 new folded papers to each the remaining 4 bases and create the next “pyramids”.

When finished and done correctly, you now have 10 dimensional pyramid points, 10 flat points (marked in yellow) and 10 papers left.

This is now how the star looks when turned over. You see the 10 flat points (marked in yellow) and the 10 pyramid shaped points from underneath.

6. Remove the paper clips. You will need them again for the next steps.

This is the widest point of the star. From here it will now decrease and you will be working towards closing it off.

Bascetta Paper Stars
These beautiful stars have been a popular craft trend in this country at Christmas for several years now and always seemed like they would be intimidating to make. They are named after the Italian mathematician Paolo Bascetta. 30 pyramid shaped modules are made out of paper that then get connected together to form the final star, which has a total of 20 round points. Neither scissors nor glue is required and they are quite sturdy, when finished.
