Crafting with Make Up Pads - Snowflake Ornaments or Snowflake Chain/ Garland

What happens when you discover that you have run out of white felt and wanted to make a soft snowflake garland using it? You start looking for alternatives. Fabric came to mind but would have been too flimsy for a garland. Plus fabric frays. Make up pads came to mind and then the idea was tested. Because they are pressed layers of cotton, it was uncertain if they would work out. But actually after die cutting them, they turned out well with an extra plus. The positive snowflake was what was needed. But because the make up pad is round, the negative left over could also be used as ornaments. It was two projects for the price of one.

Christmas Craft - Soft Snowflake Ornaments

For this project the following supplies were used:

Make Up Pads
- soft cotton make up pads
- a die cutting machine of your choice that is compatible with the dies listed below

Snowflakes and Stars Dies
- dies such as the Sizzix Originals and thin metal dies from Spellbinders and similar work really well for this idea

Sizzix Sizzlits were also tried out but were not good for this project. The make up pads stuck to the soft side of the Sizzlit and then the layers tore as the snowflakes were being removed from the die.

Instructions:

Die Cutting Snowflakes
1. Simply place the die centered on the make up pad and run it through your machine as you would with any other material. Because these pads are thin, yet layered, it is recommended to run the die through the machine at least 3-4 times through the machine to get a clean cut.

Snowflake Positive and Negative
2. The result gives you a positive and a negative. Both can be used.

Creating Soft Snowflake Garland
3. A garland can be created using the positive images. Take a strand of embroidery thread and hot glue it to the backsides of the snowflakes to create a chain.

Snowflakes Decorating Staircase
Here individual snowflakes and stars were used to embellish the garland. The cotton make up pads adhere to an artificial green Christmas garland without any extra help. Just press them on and they hold on their own.

A chain of snowflakes look pretty decorating a window. You can make several chains and place them next to each other, as well. Or you can can hang the snowflakes like a garland to decorate the tree or hang a snowflake garland from a shelf.
