Paper Pouch Advent Calendar

The time in December until Christmas seems so long for children! To help the waiting time seem a little shorter, you can make them an advent calendar. The calender is sort of a countdown to Christmas. Each day, when the child gets up, the corresponding pouch for that day gets opened and there is a little something in the pouch for the child to sweeten the day. There are many types of advent calendars and this particular type of calender is quick and very inexpensive to make. Below is an example of how we decorated our pouches. When you have finished making the pouches, you can put them into a decorative Christmas basket or maybe hang them on a garland or on a wreath. They are a decoration in themselves. You can fill them with candy or very small inexpensive gifts. Or even have a little note in each pouch with a promise of a fun activity you and your child will do together during the holiday season.

Christmas Paper Craft - Advent Calendar Bags

For this project you will need:

- brown packing paper- 24 pieces each measuring 15 cm x 25 cm
- paper punches or dies in many different Christmas figures (here we used dies from Cuttlebug the alphabet and number set
“Olivia” and from Sizzix Originals “Gift #2”)
- red and turquoise green construction paper
- sewing machine with red thread
- hole puncher
- 24 red brads
- ruler
- scissors

1. Fold each side edge of the pouch about 1.5 cm in and then fold the paper in half matching the long sides. Now the top and the sides are open.
2. Sew a zig-zag stitch along the side edges of the pouch about 1 cm from the side edge. This leaves only the top edge open.
3. Punch 1 hole in the top of each pouch.
4. Punch out or die cut the motifs you would like to use and glue them then onto the pouch.
4. Either write the numbers 1-24 on each bag or die cut the numbers 1-24 and glue these onto the bag.
5. Punch or die cut Christmas shapes out and glue these onto the pouch.
6. Fill each pouch with the gift and then insert the brad through the hole to close the pouch.
