Extra Thick Knitted Winter Socks

These were made with a fingering weight sock yarn that was doubled. With that you get a thickness that is excellent for warm house socks for the winter. Because the yarn is doubled, the socks do not take as much time to knit as with a single yarn. These are so great to make and it is fun combining different colors together.

Thick and Colorful Winter Socks 1

For this project you will need:

- fingering weight sock yarn in two different colors (here the color black was combined with a second rainbow colored yarn)
The yarn used is about 420 meters/100 g skein
- a set of 5 double pointed metric size 3.5, 3.75 or 4 knitting needles (depending on your knitting gauge)
  (US 4, 5 or 6, UK /, 9 or 8) that are 15 centimeters or 6 inches long
- ruler
- scissors
- large eye needle for sewing threads when finished

Experience with knitting socks is recommended to make this project.

Instructions:

The socks were knitted with 5 needles using size 3.5 metric needles. (Four needles to hold the sock in the round and the 5th needle is the working needle). The cuff and leg of these socks were knitted in a ribbing stitch (k2, p2) as well as the instep of the sock. The heel and sole are knitted in a stockinette stitch. Knitting with this tight ribbing stitch guarantees that they will be really stretchy at the leg and won’t slide down all the time. Also the sock sits snug on the foot. The decreased area at the toe continues with only stockinette stitches.

To knit socks with the classic heel, like the pair below, you will find a tutorial link below. These socks are knitted in the size of European 36-37 which is about US size 7 or UK size 5 and 40 stitches using doubled yarn were casted on using size 3.5 (metric) needles. That means 10 stitches on each needle.

The cuff and leg were knitted 20 centimeters long. Then while the front half of the sock “rested” a classic heel was made. Once the heel area was complete, the front and heel were knitted in rounds again. The sock was knitted another 19 centimeters (measured from the back of the heel to the edge of the needles) and then the decreasing started. On every second round, 1 stitch was decreased on each needle. Once there were only 5 stitches remaining on each needle, 1 stitch was then decreased on each needle on each round (3 more rounds) until there were only 2 stitches left on each needle. Then the thread was cut so it was about 10 cm and a large blunt needle was threaded using this thread. The needle was pulled through the remaining 8 stitches and then sewn on the inside of the sock.

You will be doubling your yarn throughout the whole project.

Knitting gauge: (measured slightly stretched) 24 stitches and 29 rows  = 10 x 10 centimeters (approximately 4 x 4 inches)

Knitting Pattern: For the cuff and the top of the foot, a simple rib stitch using *2 right stitches and then 2 left stitches repeating again from *

For the heel and bottom of the foot, a normal stockinette stitch was used.

The rainbow colored yarn used for these socks was also used for these Striped Winter Socks.

Illustrated Craft Tutorial - How to Knit Socks

About the illustrated Craft Tutorial for Knitting Socks:

The illustrated knitting tutorial shows you the basic steps how to knit socks. The socks being shown are another pair than these on this page. Please follow the instructions above concerning the pattern, the amount to cast on and which stitches were used for these particular pair of socks.

The technique for knitting for socks is basically the same for any size you choose to knit. The amount of stitches to cast on and also the length of the foot will vary depending on which size you are knitting for. This particular pair of socks was knitted with sock yarn and the yarn was doubled throughout the whole knitting process.

Because of the amount of images used to create this tutorial, the tutorial is broken down into two parts. The first page covers the sock from the cuff to the heel and the second page covers the sock from the gusset to the toe.

These socks were knitted just like the socks in the other images except that a skein of purple skein and a purple/mixed skein were used instead of the yarns in the material list above.
