Illustrated Craft Tutorial - How to Sew a Beach Bag... or Shopping Tote - Part 1 - Sewing the Basic Bag Together

This is the first of four pages that will show you how to make your own bag. Here you will be cutting the bag into shape and preparing it for the next steps.

A seam allowance of 7 millimeters is included in the measurements. Sew with a 7 millimeter seam allowance unless otherwise indicated.

Beach Bag Tutorial 1

1. Place your two 50 x 50 centimeter squares on the table, with the right sides facing each other. Use the water soluble marker to mark 7.5 centimeter squares on the bottom corners of each fabric.

Beach Bag Tutorial 2

2. Cut the squares out from both layers of fabric.

Beach Bag Tutorial 3

3. This is how it looks on both sides now.

Beach Bag Tutorial 4

4. To taper the top of the bag a bit, use the water soluble marker and place a dot at the 5 cm mark from the side edge of each top corner

Beach Bag Tutorial 5

5. Use the quilter’s ruler and draw a line from the top dot down to the top of the bottom corner of the same side.

Repeat for the other side, too.

Beach Bag Tutorial 6

6. Then cut away this piece. Repeat on the other side.

Craft Project for the Summer - Sew a Fabric Beach Bag or Shopping Tote
You can never have enough bags. And the best is when you have one that no other person has. This particular one is very sturdy and durable and can be used for holiday on the beach or pool or as a shopping tote. The fabric used is from Ikea and is a heavy and strong fabric that can hold a lot of weight. The bag is complete in one afternoon. Using nylon webbing for the handles also saves time in the creation of the bag.
