Winter Welcome Chalkboard

This practical idea is not only great for a busy home, but makes also a great gift for friends and neighbors. With wood, a paper napkin and chalkboard paint, you can get started making this project. We chose this cute chickadee napkin because it looked so perfect for the winter months but you can select from any of the numerous paper napkins available.

For this project you will need:

- 6 mm thick plywood (length will be according to your needs)
- a piece of wood molding trim to decoratively divide the paper napkin and the chalkboard sections
- paper napkin with design of choice (the napkin quarter measures 16.5 x 16.5 cm - about a 5 1/5 inch square)
- paper napkin applique glue
- masking tape
- clear sealant to seal motif
- chalkboard paint
- black acrylic paint
- paint to match napkin
- assorted paint brushes
- twine for hanging
- drill to make holes
- wood glue

Instructions:

1. First saw the wood so that it is the same width as the paper napkin quarter you are using. You can decide the length of the wood to fit your needs. Sand the surface and edges smooth.
2. Mark off the area with masking tape that is reserved for the napkin. Because chalkboard paint is more expensive, first paint the rest of the board with ordinary black paint to base coat it. Once the paint is dry, then apply the chalkboard paint over the black paint. Let the paint dry.
3. Cut the molding piece to the same width as the board and paint it in a color matching your napkin. Set aside to dry.
4. Now you will apply your paper napkin to the board. To do this, cut out the napkin quarter you wish to use. Discard all but the top ply. Brush on a thin layer of paper napkin applique glue on the board. Place the napkin exactly how you want it over this section. Smooth the napkin with your fingers and then carefully apply a coat of napkin glue over the napkin. Start at the middle and work your way outwards. Simultaneously try to avoid any wrinkles while doing this. Once the glue has dried, apply a coat of Modge Podge to the napkin to give it a luster and to seal the napkin.
5. Drill a hole in each of the top corners of the board and insert a piece of twine for hanging.
6. Glue on the molding piece between the napkin and chalkboard section.
