Sparkling Felt Fish

Cookie cutters make great templates for crafting because the shapes are simple and they are also easy to trace around. Here a cookie cutter in the shape of a fish was used to create this small swarm of fish. The sequins give the fish a lot of sparkle and shimmer, which is similar to images or films you see of fish in their natural habitat.

For these fish you will need:

- blue felt
- fish cookie cutter
- pencil to trace
- scissors
- blue shimmering sequins
- small light blue beads
- 1 black sequin
- batting to fill the fish
- sewing machine
- needle and blue thread

Instructions for one fish:

1. Place two pieces of felt on top of each other (right sides are out) and pin together. Trace the cookie cutter on the felt and then cut out.
2. Sew the two layers together with the machine on the line you drew, leaving an opening for stuffing the fish. Cut the fish out around the outside of the sewing line with a small border.
3. Stuff the fish so that they are a little firm but not too stiff and then place under the machine and sew the opening closed.
4. Secure your thread to one side of the tail fin. You will only be working on the front of the fish so you will only be working under the surface of the top felt layer.
5. Insert the first sequin onto the needle and then a bead over the sequin. Push both pieces down to the surface of the felt. Then insert the needle only through the sequin again (not the bead), go just under the surface of the felt and bring it up again where your next sequin will be placed. This secures the first sequin in place. Continue in this manner until the fish is covered to your satisfaction. The back half of these fish plus a border around the front half was covered with sequins.

Sewing the fish is quick to do but it will take a bit of time to stitch on the sequins.
