The first step in Manhattan was in Penn Station at Madison Square Gardens. Coming up the steps and seeing the city for the first time was a breathtaking experience. One already felt “in the middle of the city”, and this was only the beginning.
Manhattan is an endless collection of skyscrapers and buildings. The boasting skyline of New York City and Manhattan can be best experienced from the observation point of the Empire State Building. Try to pick a day that is not so hazy if you have a choice. Because waiting time to take the elevator to the top can be up to 2 hours, patience is needed. The cost for adults as of July 2007 is $18.00 but the view is really worth the price. Once you reach your destination, you can take your time to absorb the vastness of the city. The view from the south side is a favorite because one can see not only uptown and downtown Manhattan, but also the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, as well.
Another great view of the city is from the water. There is a ferry that leaves from Pier 6 which takes you to the Statue of Liberty for pictures and then around the harbour to the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. The ride takes an hour and you remain on the ferry.
