Spring and Easter Crafts

Fabric and Textile Crafts - Large Fabric Box Using the Rag Quilt Technique

One is always looking for possibilities to store or organize their items. This particular box is being used to keep knitting supplies together but you can use it to hold just about anything. These type boxes are easy to sew and also very decorative as well. This box measures 35 x 35 centimeters but you can choose any size you need to fit your needs.

Large Fabric Box

For this project you will need:

- strong fabric matching your decor (for this particular box, 5 pieces each measuring 35 x 35 centimeters
  were used)
- solid colored lining fabric that coordinates with the chosen fabric, also 5 pieces, each measuring 35 x 35
  centimeters
- 10 pieces of strong iron-on interfacing, each piece measuring 32 x 32 centimeters
- 5 pieces of batting, each piece measuring 32 x 32 centimeters
- sewing thread that matches the fabric
- scissors and sewing supplies

For another example of a similar box in a smaller size can be found here >>> Soft Fabric Box

Instructions:

1. Iron on the interfacing to the backside of each of the fabric pieces. Now layer the pieces like a sandwich in this manner:

1 printed fabric piece face down
1 piece of batting
1 lining fabric, face up

2. Sew an “x” through each sandwich to hold the layers together.
3. Decide which piece will be the bottom. Sew now the remaining 4 pieces on each side of the bottom piece so that you have what looks like a cross. The seam allowances are faceing outwards
4. Take two sides together and sew them so that the seam allowance is on the outside. Do this with the remaining 3 sides so that your box is now complete.
5. Stich across the entire top of the box to close off the fabric. If your box seems a bit flimsy, sew a diagonal stich across each of the top 4 corners, about 2 centimeters from the corner to pull the sides a little bit together.
