Black and Rainbow Striped Knitted Winter Socks

These colorful socks were knitted with a fingering weight sock yarn that was doubled to make them extra thick. For the black stripes, black yarn was doubled and for the colorful stripes, rainbow colored yarn was combined with black yarn. This pattern is a great way to use up left over yarn that would otherwise not be enough for a complete pair of socks.

These socks are made in the size of European 36-37 which is about US size 7 or UK size 5.

- fingering weight sock yarn in two different colors (2 skeins of black were used plus one skein of rainbow colored yarn. The
yarn used was about 420 meters/100 g skein
- a set of 5 double pointed metric size 3.5, 3.75 or 4 knitting needles (depending on your knitting gauge)
  (US 4, 5 or 6, UK /, 9 or 8) that are 15 centimeters or 6 inches long
- ruler to measure length
- scissors
- large eye needle for sewing threads when finished

These socks are easy to make but experience with knitting socks is anyway recommended to make this project. You can also change the colors as you please. These socks were knitted in a ribbing (cuff) and stockinette (sock) stitches to keep the project simple.

Knitting gauge: (measured using the stockinette stitch, 20 stitches and about 30 rows = 10 centimeters or approximately 4 inches

The pattern to make these socks:

The cuff is knitted in a ribbing stitch using 1 skein of black plus one skein of rainbow colored yarn.

The stripes were knitted using 5 rows of black (doubled) then 2 rows of 1 each of rainbow and black yarn.

The area of the heel and the toe are knitted completely in black (doubled).

Illustrated Craft Tutorial - How to Knit Socks

The illustrated knitting tutorial shows you the steps to knitting socks like these. Only the color of yarn and pattern differs.

The technique for knitting for socks is basically the same for any size you choose to knit. The amount of stitches to cast on and also the length of the foot will vary depending on which size you are knitting for. This particular pair of socks was knitted with sock yarn and the yarn was doubled throughout the whole knitting process.

Because of the amount of images used to create this tutorial, the tutorial is broken down into two parts. The first page covers the sock from the cuff to the heel and the second page covers the sock from the gusset to the toe.
