Lightweight Knitted Cowl

This cowl looks lovely, keeps your neck warm on those chilly days and weighs less than 150 grams (about 5.3 ounces). It is made using 3 skeins of sock yarn simultaneously and is very easy to knit. The cowl is an elegant looking accessory around the neck and keeps you warm at the same time.

Knitting gauge: 10 stitches knitted in the moss stitch / seed stitch pattern creates 10 centimeters (about 4 inches)

Finished size: 40 centimeters (about 15.7 inches) wide and 70 centimeters (about 27.5 inches) long when open, 40 centimeters (about 15.7 inches) wide and 35 centimeters (about 13.8 centimeters) when sewn together as a cowl.

For this project you will need:

- 3 x 50 gram skeins of sock yarn (each skein has 210 meters / about 230 yards in length) in the colors of medium blue, black
and a blue mixed color yarn - you can of course choose any three colors you like to get the look that you wish to have
- 12 mm circular knitting needles (US size 17)
- scissors
- large eye needle to sew the cowl closed

Knitting Instructions:

Create a swatch using the “Moss Stitch” or “Seed Stitch” and the recommended yarn to make sure you achieve the gauge required for this particular snood. 10 stitches should be about 10 centimeters in width.

Cast on 40 stitches and knit in rows using the moss stitch or seed stitch until you reach a length of 70 centimeters (about 27.5 inches). Once you have achieved that length, simply sew the two short ends together.

Moss Stitch or Seed Stitch:

Row 1: *K1, P1, then repeat from * until the end of the row, turn
Row 2:   Knit or Purl the stitches exactly as you see them before you, turn
Row 3:   *P1, K1, then repeat from * until the end of row, turn
Row 4:   Knit or Purl the stitches exactly as you see them before you, turn

Then repeat rows 1-4 until you reach a length of 70 centimeters (about 27.5 inches).

This is a close-up of the cowl. Just simply slip it over the head and adjust how you want it to stay.

This is how the cowl looks when finished and flat on the table.

The cowl has the extra advantage that the height is high enough so that you can pull it over your head on cooler days to keep the ears warm.
