Christmas and Winter Crafts

Christmas Crafts - Christmas Cards - Fabric Christmas Cards

Making cards using appliqued fabric motifs is easy and with all of the fabric choices, the hardest part will be choosing which fabric to purchase. The fabric “Winter Welcome” ©Douglas Laird Licensed to Wilmington Prints® was chosen for the set of cards below. It has an old world flair of Christmas past and a 30cm panel has 19 motifs to use for your Christmas cards.

Instructions:

These cards were made using two different techniques.

Technique 1 - Window Cards
1. To create the window cards, you will first need to applique the fabric to a piece of white cardstock. Follow this Fusible Web Tutorial to learn about fusing fabric to cardstock. Once adhered, trim around the edges to make a perfect square or rectangle shape according to the fabric motif chosen.
2. Apply white dimensional paint to the snowy areas and shake iridescent glitter onto the wet paint. Let the paint completely dry before continuing.
3. Once the paint has dried, adhere the motif inside of the card behind the window. Use double sided adhesive to adhere the motif to the card. If necessary, use also a fine line of glue on the thin window bars so that the inside areas of the window adhere also to the card and don’t leave a gap.
4. Because your motif is not necessarily the size of the card you will need to cover it up. Cut a piece of cardstock slightly smaller than the card itself. Open the card and adhere the cardstock to the inside of the card to cover the motif.

Technique 2 - Applique on Embossed Cardstock
1. You will first need to applique the fabric to a piece of white cardstock. Follow this Fusible Web Tutorial to learn about fusing fabric to cardstock. Once adhered, trim around the edges to make a perfect square or rectangle shape according to the fabric motif chosen.
2. Using your Cuttlebug embossing machine with an embossing folder, emboss a piece of coordinating cardstock larger than your fused square or rectangle.
Cuttlebug Tutorial. Now adhere the fused square onto the embossed cardstock and trim around the edge with decorative edged scissors and leaving a border.
3. Apply white dimensional paint to the snowy areas and shake iridescent glitter onto the wet paint. Let the paint completely dry before continuing.
4. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon so that each one can cover the front of the card plus enough to wrap around to the inside of the card. Wrap first the vertical ribbon and tape the ends to the inside of the card. With the second ribbon, you will need to cut a slit in the card crease about 1/3 from the bottom of the card. Insert one end of the ribbon in this slit so that this end is now on the inside of the card. Tape the end and then tape the other end coming from the front.
5. Stamp message on the top right of the card and emboss.
6. Adhere finished motif to the card using 3-D foam tape.
