Fabric Crafts - Sewing Crafts - Child's Drawstring Backpack 75

Create cording for this child’s drawstring backpack

You will need yarn and a long object such as a pencil or knitting needle.

How to Make a Cord 1

1. Cut 3 or 4 pieces of yarn three times longer than the length you need. Place all pieces together and find the middle. Hang this middle on a door knob or a rod. If you have someone who can assist you, that person can hold this end but must not let it go while creating the cord.

2. Tie the 6-8 other ends together into a knot and insert your knitting needle needle or pencil in the knotted end of the loop. Start turning the needle and continue turning until your yarn pieces are tightly woven in one another. This will take a couple of minutes and keep turning until the cording seems to start to knot. It has to feel really tight to be effective. At this point comes the tricky part and you will need 2 people. Remove the end over the doorknob. One person is holding the doorknob end and the other now will remove the knitting needle from the other end. Still holding the cord taught, find the middle of the cord and grab it with your other hand. Now both persons will approach each other and put their ends together. When you do this, the cord will twist within itself and become firmer. Now the 2 ends become one end and the middle in which you are holding with your other hand is now the second end. Now rub the length of the cording between your hands to make sure all points are connected. If there is any excess yarn hanging from the knots, carefully cut these away without cutting the knot.

5. The cording can be used for many different craft projects. Different types and colors of yarn will create new looks.
