At the end of November in Germany and around the 1st Advent Sunday, the first Christmas markets start for the holiday season. These markets, for example in Lübeck, Kiel or Hamburg, last the whole month of December. At night they are especially worth seeing when the lights are on. While walking through the markets, the air is cold but the flavour of hot Glühwein (hot red wine with spices) and cinnamon fill your nose and a cup of this drink will quickly warm you up inside. The booths sell not only commercial gift items and ornaments, but also wooden items and handcrafted items, too.
Other town and small village markets may only just be for a particular weekend in December but are even more worth seeing because of their charm. Church and charity groups often sell handmade crafts and the feeling is somehow more quaint. Many large farms, for example Stockseehof by Kiel, hold their own personal markets as well that may last up to two weeks.
